DESCRIPTION

Heartbeat Opera seeks a Producing and Development Associate to assist the Producing Director and Co-Artistic Directors. Tasks and responsibilities will include but not be limited to: contracting, payroll, budgets, managing the donor database and donor relations, and attending rehearsals, performances, and special events. The time commitment will vary over the course of the season; Heartbeat’s main performances are October 30-31, 2017 and May 2-13, 2018. The Associate Producer will be expected to work 1-3 hours/week when not directly in production and 5-20 hours/week in late October, April, and May. Applicants with at least two years of management experience and enthusiasm for opera are preferred.

MISSION

From the drama at the core of each work, Heartbeat Opera grows vivid theatrical worlds through revelatory adaptations, radical rearrangements, and ingenious design. Through an inquisitive collaborative process with a diverse community of artists, we break down traditional barriers to reimagine opera for artists and audiences of the twenty-first century.

WORK

Praised as “bold and vivid” by The New York Times, and founded by four graduates of Yale School of Drama and Yale School of Music, Heartbeat Opera has presented six fully-realized productions in its first three seasons: Kurtág's Kafka-Fragments, Offenbach's Daphnis & Chloé (new orchestral arrangement and new English translation), Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor (new orchestral arrangement and 90 minute adaptation), Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, Bizet's Carmen (new orchestral arrangement, 90 minute adaptation, new English translation of dialogues) and Puccini's Butterfly (new orchestral arrangement and 90 minute adaptation).

Heartbeat was also the first opera company to present on The High Line, and has mounted three Halloween Benefit Drag Extravaganzas: Queens of the Night: Mozart in Space at National Sawdust, and The Fairy Queen and Miss Handel at The Cotton Candy Machine. Heartbeat also staged workshop productions of Lucia di Lammermoor and Weill's The Seven Deadly Sins; and collaborated with organizations such as Atlas DIY and A BroaderWay to bring opera education to underserved students in the New York City area.
