Calling all NYC Female and Female-Identifying Playwrights and Directors
Susan Glaspell is a Pulitzer-prize winning writer, actress, journalist, and one of the founders of Provincetown Players, the first modern American theater company. She has been heralded as America’s first important 20th century female playwright. Her repertoire of short works not only reflect the political pulse of her time, they continue to shed light on the current female perspective, inspiring women in our industry to create bold, new works that speak to women of our past and present. And yet, not many people know her name. This is why British theater critic Michael Billington dubbed her “American drama’s best-kept secret.”
In order to honor this auspicious woman, in April 2018, Hunger & Thirst will present TELLING TRIFLES, a festival inspired by Susan Glaspell, American drama’s best-kept secret. The cornerstone of the festival will be performances of Glaspell’s most recognized work, Trifles.
Along with Trifles performances, Hunger & Thirst is excited to announce that we will be hosting a series of readings, workshops, and/or performances of new short works inspired by Trifles or Susan Glaspell’s life, all of which will be written by current female playwrights and directed by female directors. We feel the best way to honor such a pioneering female theatre artist like Susan Glaspell is to give voice to our current female theatre artists.
Exact list of programming, schedule, and artists involved will be announced in early February 2018. Rehearsals for all events in the festival will take place in March 2018 and scheduled based on artist availability. Festival will run from April 4-14, 2018; all events will take place at the West End Theatre on the Upper West Side.
