Caught on Camera WATCH: The Lion King’s Jelani Remy Visits the Bronx Zoo for Character Research Broadway’s Simba meets the lions that inspire his onstage persona.

In support of the Bronx Zoo’s efforts with the Wildlife Conservation Society to protect and preserve lions, The Lion King’s Jelani Remy ventured uptown to visit the real-life animals that inspire his Broadway show.

According to the zoo’s general curator Pat Thomas, the Bronx Zoo exhibit—opened in 1941—was the first predator-prey exhibit ever built in the United States, meaning lions and their prey appear in the same habitat.

Remy was not only there to gain some inspiration from the majestic felines (“They’re just workin’ on their roar,” Remy joked), he was also visiting to learn how he can stop the threat to lions like the Simba he plays onstage. “The main threat is loss of habitat,” said Thomas, which forces the lions to compete with each other for food.
