Off-Broadway News School Girls' Mirirai Sithole and More Tapped for The Homecoming Queen Off-Broadway The world premiere from Ngozi Anyanwu will begin in January at Atlantic Theatre Company.

Mirirai Sithole, who can currently be seen Off-Broadway in School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play, and playwright Mfoniso Udofia (Sojourners and Her Portmanteau) will star in the Off-Broadway world premiere of Ngozi Anyanwu’s The Homecoming Queen. The Atlantic Theatre Company production, which marks the Off-Broadway playwriting debut from actor, playwright, and director Anyanwu, will be staged in Atlantic Stage 2 beginning January 10, 2018.

Awoye Timpo, associate director of Broadway’s Tony Award-winning revival of Jitney, will direct. The run is scheduled through February 11 with a January 22 opening night.

Udofia will star as novelist Kelechi. The cast will also include Oberon K.A. Adjepong (Uncommon Sense), Segun Akande (Burning Sands), Ebbe Bassey (Saving Father), Vinie Burrows (Good Person of Szechwan), Patrice Johnson (For Colored Girls…), and Zenzi Williams (The Crucible).

In The Homecoming Queen, a bestselling novelist returns to Nigeria to care for her father. Having been absent for over a decade, the trip forces her to confront a painful past, her culture, and a deep, unexpected love.

The production will feature scenic design by Yu-Hsuan Chen, costume design by Ntokozo Fuzunina Kunene, lighting design by Oona Curley, sound design by Amatus Karim-Ali, movement direction by Hope Boykin, music direction by Nolufefe Mtshabe, and dialect coaching by Ebbe Bassey. Casting is by Caparelliotis Casting.
