A number of playwrights, both emerging and established, have made the move from writing for the stage to the small screen and continue to do both. Among those who work in both theatre and television are Pulitzer Prize winner Annie Baker, a writer on the Amazon series I Love Dick; Marco Ramirez, whose play The Royale played a hit Off-Broadway run and who works on the TV shows Orange is the New Black and Daredevil; Tanya Saracho; Meghan Kennedy; Heidi Schreck; and Beau Willimon, creator of House of Cards and playwright of The Parisian Woman, now on Broadway.
In response to this growing trend, Paradigm has hired Kelly Miller as a theatre-to-television crossover agent, Deadline reports. The position will be designed to transition and staff emerging and mid-career playwrights into television creator and showrunner roles. Miller will reportedly specialize in representing female, trans, and diverse playwrights.
“I am thrilled to welcome Kelly to Paradigm. She is so well-regarded in our industry, and her wide range of experience and expertise in both theater and television positions her to attract playwrights who can quickly and successfully transition to television,” Jack Tantleff, head of the Theatre Literary Department at Paradigm, told Deadline.
Miller has worked as a producer, in theatre development, as a dramaturg, and is a founding member of The Kilroys, a Los Angeles-based group of artists advocating for greater parity in the theatre.
