Cabaret & Concert News Orange Is the New Black Star Lea DeLaria Welcomes Guest Performers for Her Birdland Series in NYC Rachel Bay Jones, Jennifer Nettles, Sandra Bernhard, and more will fly into Birdland with DeLaria.

Lea DeLaria, the actor-singer who earned a Drama Desk Award nomination nomination for her performance as a randy taxi driver in On the Town, will return to New York with an evening of songs and guest stars October 24–28 at Birdland Jazz Club.

Announced guests for the 10-show booking include Tony Award winner Rachel Bay Jones (Dear Evan Hansen) and Tony nominee Norm Lewis (Sweeney Todd). A club spokesperson said each guest will perform only on selected songs. The program will change each day to suit the guest.

October 24: Norm Lewis (Sweeney Todd) at 8:30 and 11 PM
October 25: Sandra Bernhard at 8:30 and 11 PM
October 26: Janis Siegel at 8:30 and 11 PM
October 27: Jennifer Nettles at 8:30 PM; Rachel Bay Jones (Dear Evan Hansen) at 11 PM
October 28: Danielle Brooks at 8:30 and 11 PM

Probably best known for her current TV role as Carrie “Big Boo” Black on the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black, DeLaria will give two shows nightly, at 8:30 and 11 PM. The concert is based on her 2015 album of the same title, which includes her renditions of the Bowie hits including “Let’s Dance,” “Life on Mars,” “Modern Love,” and “Rebel Rebel.”

DeLaria, who also played Dr. Scott in the 2000 Broadway revival of The Rocky Horror Show, has focused her stage work on singing in recent years, playing Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Hollywood Bowl, The Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Sydney Opera House.

Birdland is located at 314 West 44th Street in Manhattan just west of the Times Square theatre district. Tickets, which cost $20–$50 (plus a $10 drink/food minimum), can be ordered online or by phone: (212) 581-3080.

Norm Lewis has been a special guest performer on Playbill’s Broadway on the High Seas cruises.

Rachel Bay Jones is scheduled to appear on the upcoming cruise, Broadway on the Danube River with Michael Feinstein for November 3–13, also featuring Julia Murney, Christopher Fitzgerald, Laura Osnes, Marc Kudisch, Brandon Uranowitz, and Seth Rudetsky.

Tickets are also now on sale for Playbill’s Broadway on the High Seas July 2018 cruise to Iceland, accompanied by Judy Kuhn, Christine Ebersole, Rob McClure, Jarrod Spector, Carmen Cusack, and Sierra Boggess.
