Bessie- and Obie-winning playwright Robbie McCauley will debut her newest solo piece Sugar at the third edition of the Lumberyard In The City Winter Festival from Lumberyard Contemporary Performing Arts. In Sugar, McCauley tracks her own struggle with diabetes against a history of slavery, colonization, and the rise of a health epidemic that disproportionately impacts the African-American community.
Sugar, directed by Marueen Shea, will be presented February 1–3, 2018, as part of the festival at New York Live Arts in Chelsea. The 90-minute show will feature music by Chauncey Moore and projections by Mirta Tocci.
The festival will run January 25–February 10. The lineup also includes the New York premiere of Light, Part 44 (Bamboo Forest) (竹林) as well as Light, Part 8 (1974) from choreographer Kei Takei and her company Moving Earth Orient Sphere; as well as the world premiere of Latitude from choreographer, dancer, and visual artist Dana Reitz.
