After nearly two decades at the helm, Lincoln Center Festival Director Nigel Redden will step down from his position this September. The 22nd annual festival, which will run July 10–30, will be the last event under his direction.
Beginning in the fall, Redden will concentrate his efforts on the artistic expansion of the annual Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, South Carolina, where he currently serves as general director, as well as other global artistic projects. A new festival director has not yet been announced.
As the Festival director since 1998, Redden has overseen 1,465 performances of opera, music, dance, theatre, and interdisciplinary engagements by artists from more than 50 countries.
“The Lincoln Center Festival provides a unique opportunity to complement the important work of the constituent companies with performances of classic traditions from around the world, as well as major new works that would not otherwise be seen in New York,” commented Redden in a press statement. “The artistic scope has been very broad and the support provided by Lincoln Center’s leadership has been inspirational—whether it was to produce a 19-hour long Kunju opera, construct a replica of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s home theater here in New York, or mount an event that extended from Roosevelt Island to Times Square and back to the Chrysler Building.”
Redden was named a Chevalier de L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2001, honoring his work with French companies, and in 2010, the New York Drama Critics’ Circle recognized Lincoln Center Festival programming with a special citation for “visionary international programming.”
This summer’s festival will feature 20 international productions and 43 performances across dance, music, theatre, and film from around the U.S. and the world. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit LincolnCenterFestival.org.
Lileana Blain-Cruz directs the new production, opening April 23.
The Cuban-born composer is this season's Debs Composer's Chair.
The cast is led by Bryonha Marie and Nathan Gunn, with Tony winner Ted Sperling at the baton.
The season, opening September 21, will include 58 ballets across 21 weeks of performances.
