Journey’s End, which debuted onstage at London’s Apollo Theatre in 1928, dramatizes World War I’s Spring Offensive launched by the Germans in March 1918. The play, most recently seen on Broadway in 2007, was adapted into a movie, and producers have just announced that Good Deed Entertainment has acquired the U.S. distribution rights, according to Deadline.

The film will premiere in the United States 100 years after the attack that it depicts.

The movie stars Sam Claflin, Paul Bettany, Stephen Graham, Asa Butterfield, Toby Jones, and Tom Sturridge (1984) in a screenplay adapted by Simon Reade.

Directed by Saul Dibb, the film premiered in Toronto and played the London Film Festival as well. The story concerns Lieutenant Raleigh (Butterfield), “who has pulled strings to join his childhood friend and hero Captain Stanhope (Claflin) on the front line.” But Stanhope was not prepared for Raleigh’s arrival, and while war has changed him, his one hope is to return to his love—Raleigh’s sister.

Guy de Beaujeu produced alongside Reade through Fluidity Films. The production is backed by the BFI (with money from U.K.’s The National Lottery), Fluidity Films, British Film Company, Metro International, Ingenious, The Welsh Government’s Media Investment Budget, and Adrian Politowski’s Umedia.
