The Tony-winning actor's solo show, Stories by Heart, is about his late father; Broadway performances begin in December.

John Lithgow swung by Late Night With Seth Meyers November 7 to chat about his role in Pitch Perfect 3 (in which he puts his Australian accent to use as Rebel Wilson’s father), as well as his upcoming Broadway show, John Lithgow: Stories by Heart. Watch the interview in the video above.

Lithgow told host Meyers that much of the play—a solo show in two acts—is inspired by or about his late father.

“A lot of it is about him,” said the the two-time Tony winner and Oscar nominee. “It’s very personal but it’s also about stories and storytelling.”

The actor explained that in Stories by Heart, both acts are anchored by a short story which he performs as a monologue. The stories are from an old book that his father read to him as a child—and which he later read to him when he was near death.

As previously announced, Stories by Heart will play a limited engagement at the American Airlines Theatre beginning December 21 in a production from Roundabout Theatre Company. The Broadway premiere will mark the culmination of the show’s development over several years and performances throughout the country.
