The New York premiere of playwright-composer Claire van Kampen’s Farinelli and the King, starring Oscar and Tony winner Mark Rylance as a sleep deprived King Philippe V of Spain, had a strong first week of Broadway performances.

The London hit, which arrived on Broadway December 5, grossed a total of $767,377 for its first seven Broadway performances (94 percent of its potential) at the Belasco Theatre.

Theatregoers paid on average $109 to see the theatrical venture between between Van Kampen and Rylance, who are also married. It officially opens December 17.

Elsewhere on Broadway, Hello, Dolly! and the solo bio-musical event Springsteen on Broadway continue break house records, with Dolly! bringing in $2,519,456 for the week ending December 10, and Bruce Springsteen pulling in $2,384,275.
