A developmental lab of the new musical Moulin Rouge, based on Baz Luhrmann’s 2001award-winning film, will be held this fall, according to an Equity casting notice.

Directed by Tony nominee Alex Timbers, the lab is scheduled for October 30–December 15. A separate choreography lab will be held earlier, currently scheduled for August 21–September 1.

Moulin Rouge has a book by Tony Award winner John Logan. Justin Levine is the music supervisor, and casting is by Jim Carnahan and Stephen Kopel. Global Creatures produces.

Timbers' stage credits include Oh, Hello on Broadway; Rocky; Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson (Tony nomination for Best Book of a Musical); and Peter and the Starcatcher (Tony nomination for Best Direction of a Play) on Broadway, and Here Lies Love and The Robber Bridegroom Off-Broadway.

Logan won the Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critic Circle, and Drama League awards for his 2010 play Red. His other Broadway credits include the libretto for Sting’s 2014 musical The Last Ship and the script for Bette Midler’s 2013 solo show, I’ll Eat You Last: A Chat with Sue Mengers.

The Moulin Rouge! film is set at the decadent Parisian nightclub, the Moulin Rouge (Red Mill), and tells the story of a poet who becomes obsessed with the beautiful singer and courtesan Satine. The movie is filled with musical numbers set in and out of the club. The cast is headed by Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor.

The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won two: Best Costume Design and Best Art Direction—Sets.
