Deconstructing Patti, With Patti LuPone and Seth Rudetsky, Presented September 24 | Playbill

Broadway News Deconstructing Patti, With Patti LuPone and Seth Rudetsky, Presented September 24 Olivier and two-time Tony winner LuPone reflects on her career in story and song with host Rudetsky.

Deconstructing Patti, An Evening of Broadway Songs and Stories with Patti LuPone and Seth Rudetsky, to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, is presented September 24 at 9 PM; the celebratory concert concludes the 31st Annual Broadway Flea Market & Grand Auction.

The one-night-only event, originally set for May 14, will be held at Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre (208 West 41st Street, NYC), currently home to the new musical War Paint, starring two-time Tony winners LuPone and Christine Ebersole. Both were Tony-nominated for their performances.

The production announced earlier this week that it will end its Broadway run December 30. LuPone has already found her next gig, playing Joanne in the 2018 London revival of Stephen Sondheim's Company.

“I’ve had a blast over the past several years performing the show with Seth around the country and in London,” LuPone said in an earlier statement. “Since this will be the first time we perform it in New York, I want to be sure I give the audience everything they’re expecting from me and more, which, at this time, I feel is not possible due to the demands of performing War Paint eight times a week during a very hectic awards season. I can’t give less than 100 percent at any performance. I’m sorry for any inconvenience caused by this rescheduling. I look forward to sharing the stage with Seth come September and helping to make a difference for all of the organizations nationwide supported by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.”

For the first time in New York City, Tony, Grammy, and Olivier Award winner LuPone revisits some of her iconic roles, and Rudetsky—the host of Seth’s Big Fat Broadway on SiriusXM—deconstructs them. After acclaimed performances together across the U.S. and in London, this unscripted evening includes stories LuPone hasn’t talked about anywhere else and would share only at the prompting of Rudetsky.

Tom Viola, executive director of Broadway Cares, added, “They say all good things are worth waiting for and, if that’s true, a night such as Deconstructing Patti will make the anticipation of one of our most iconic events even more exciting for fans of Broadway, Patti and Seth. Patti has been a part of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS’ efforts since our earliest days. I’m thrilled to kick off our season with what I know will be a fabulous and delightful evening of Patti’s legendary songs and best inside stories. Between now and our special evening of ’deconstruction’ in September, do not miss her radiant performance in War Paint.”

The evening is produced by Broadway Cares in association with Mark Cortale.

LuPone won Tony Awards as Best Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Madame Rose in the most recent Broadway production of Gypsy and for her turn as Eva Peron in the original Evita. In London, she originated the role of Fantine in Les Miserables, first with the Royal Shakespeare Company, followed by a run on the West End. LuPone won an Olivier Award for her performance, as well as for her performance the same season in the Acting Company’s production of The Cradle Will Rock. Her extensive television and film credits include recent appearances on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Penny Dreadful, Girls, American Horror Story: Coven, and opposite Robert DeNiro and Danny DeVito in The Comedian. A founding member of the Drama Division of The Juilliard School and John Houseman’s The Acting Company, she is the author of The New York Times bestseller Patti LuPone: A Memoir.
