Tony Awards Dear Evan Hansen Tony Winner Alex Lacamoire on Why Live Theatre Is Important The Tony-winning orchestrator discusses how theatre has impacted his life and the lives of others.

Prior to Dear Evan Hansen’s night of success, Tony-winning orchestrator Alex Lacamoire walked the red carpet at the 71st Tony Awards with his wife June 11. In addition to his win, the musical took home five other trophies, including Best Musical and Best Performance by Leading Actor in a Musical for Ben Platt.

“I think live theatre is important because it’s all about community; it’s about collaboration; it’s all about getting you out of your shell in order to raise your voice and speak out loud and perform in front of people,” Lacamoire said on the red carpet. “I think for me, it was definitely a big confidence booster, so I think it does that for a lot of people.”

Lacamoire previously won Tony Awards for two Lin-Manuel Miranda musicals: last year's Hamilton and In the Heights in 2008.
