The critically acclaimed production of The Grinning Man, which played the Bristol Old Vic in autumn 2016, will transfer to Studio 1 at Trafalgar Studios beginning December 5.

Based on the Victor Hugo novel The Man Who Laughs, the production will be directed by Tony winner Tom Morris (War Horse).

The romantic gothic musical love story, set in a fantastical world with a dark heart, is brought to life by Kneehigh writer Carl Grose (Dead Dog in a Suitcase) with a score by by Tim Phillips and Marc Teitler. The cast is led by Louis Maskell in the title role of Grinpayne with Julian Bleach as Barkilphedro, a vengeful clown with a heart of lead.

The Grinning Man reunites director Morris with two puppeteers who began their careers inside Joe and Topthorn in the original production of War Horse: Finn Caldwell and Toby Olié, who are now leading their own puppetry company Gyre & Gimble.

In The Grinning Man, a strange new act has arrived at the fairground. “Who is this youth and how did he get his hideous smile?” ask production notes. “Helped by an old man, a lone wolf and a blind girl, his story must be told.”

The creative team is completed by designer Jon Bausor, costume designer Jean Chan, music director Tom Deering, lighting designer Rob Casey, and sound designer Simon Baker.
